Zhang Zeduan

1085-1145 Chinese

Realistic scroll of Song urban life

Zhang Zeduan (exact birth and death years unknown; some say 1085–1145), styled Zhengdao, was from Dongwu in Mizhou (now Zhucheng, Shandong), and was a painter of the Northern Song Dynasty in China. Zhang Zeduan loved learning from a young age. In his early years, he traveled to the Northern Song capital Bianjing (now Kaifeng, Henan) to study, and later focused on painting, developing a high level of artistic skill. During the reign of Emperor Huizong of Song, Zhang worked at the Hanlin Painting Academy and became a court painter. He specialized in architectural painting and especially enjoyed painting boats, carts, markets, bridges, streets, and city walls, developing a unique style. Later, 'after losing his official position, he lived at home and sold paintings to make a living.' Zhang Zeduan's famous architectural painting, *Along the River During the Qingming Festival*, is a vivid and realistic depiction of daily life in the city. The painting is a long scroll that carefully and vividly recreates the thriving scene of the Northern Song capital, Bianjing, from the peaceful outskirts to the bustling city streets. It's a work of high historical value. The painting centers around the Bian River and, with a realist approach and outstanding artistic talent, provides detailed and lively depictions of various scenes and people. In the scroll, over five meters long, he portrayed more than 550 figures along with many oxen, horses, carriages, boats, houses, bridges, and city structures—all included with careful attention. From this, one can learn about the economic conditions, urban-rural relations, and social customs at the time, making it a valuable visual resource for studying the politics, economy, technology, and culture of the Song Dynasty. Besides *Along the River During the Qingming Festival*, other surviving works attributed to him include *Jinmingchi Competition for the Dragon Boat During the Dragon Boat Festival*, which depicts a dragon boat race scene.
