마담 X (피에르 고트로 부인) by John Singer Sargent, 1883-84

This portrait, "Madame X," marks a turning point in Sargent's career and is one of the most famous "failures" in art history. In 1883, Sargent was commissioned by Parisian socialite Madame Gautreau to create a portrait that would showcase her beauty and status. However, when the painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1884, it caused an uproar. The lady in the painting wears a black evening gown, with one strap slipped off her shoulder, her pose elegant yet slightly provocative. This bold depiction of sensuality was considered scandalous in the conservative Parisian social circles. Madame Gautreau and her mother publicly protested, demanding the painting be removed, refusing to pay for it, and rejecting the work. Sargent's reputation plummeted, forcing him to leave Paris and relocate to London. Although this incident made it difficult for Sargent to establish himself in France, it unexpectedly prompted a transformation in his artistic style. In London, he gradually shifted from portraiture to freer watercolors and mural paintings, eventually becoming one of the most sought-after portraitists on both sides of the Atlantic. "Madame X" was ultimately acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, becoming one of the most controversial and influential portraits in Western art history. Its composition and handling of light and shadow continue to be referenced by artists to this day.
