Interpretation Content

This 1931 watercolor and ink study, with color bars and handwritten annotations along its lower edge, was evidently conceived as a preparatory sketch for a mural. Rivera frames the composition with two enormous serpents whose intertwined tongues symbolize the order of heaven and earth and the generative force of creation, making the image read like a cosmological map. On the left, waters teem with fish and crabs; on the right, land gathers jaguars, deer, and snakes. At the center, three figures stand proudly, setting humanity and nature, myth and reality, side by side. The contrast between aquatic and terrestrial zones establishes a balanced, almost diagrammatic composition, while the central figures anchor the scene as both protagonists and mediators. The work draws on pre-Columbian traditions—above all the imagery of the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl—while reorganizing them through modern, flattened lines and color fields. Its diagrammatic clarity and symbolic density suggest that Rivera was testing how a mural could communicate a universal narrative to a broad public. As a mural plan, the sheet reveals Rivera’s precise control over public-art narrative and visual structure. It also translates indigenous Mexican myth into a modernist image, a move with lasting consequences for the identity of Latin American modern art and for the mural movement.
