Brooklyn Bridge by Abraham Walkowitz, ca. 1912

Abraham Walkowitz was absolutely obsessed with the Brooklyn Bridge, creating thousands of sketches and paintings of it throughout his life! This dreamy, abstract version from around 1912 captures the bridge's soaring cables and massive stone towers not as a rigid structure, but as a rhythmic dance of vertical lines and soft, ghostly washes of blue and gray. Part of Alfred Stieglitz's famous modernist circle, Walkowitz cared more about the electric energy and feeling of the city than a photorealistic copy, turning a feat of engineering into pure visual poetry.
