Landscape by Moonlight by Aert van der Neer, c. 1640 - c. 1650

Aert van der Neer was the undisputed master of moonlight, capturing the eerie, silvery glow of the Dutch night sky like no one else. Interestingly, he didn't even start painting seriously until he was in his thirties, working as a wine merchant and tavern keeper first! Despite creating some of the most atmospheric landscapes of the Dutch Golden Age, he died in poverty, with his creditors seizing his paintings to pay off his debts. Today, his moody, cloud-filled skies and glowing water reflections are celebrated as masterpieces of Baroque atmosphere.
