Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist
ca. 1540
Bronzino really knew how to dress his subjects, outfitting the Virgin Mary in a fabulous pink gown that pops against the green landscape. She raises her hands in a gesture of divine acceptance while the Christ Child, looking like a very serious toddler, leans against a globe. To the right, a young Saint John the Baptist watches the scene, clutching his reed cross. The smooth, almost airbrushed skin of the figures is a dead giveaway of the Mannerist style, which cared much more about looking chic and elegant than being perfectly realistic.
