Vengeance of Joukahainen
1903
This intense 1903 scene by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela brings a dramatic moment from the *Kalevala*—Finland's national epic—to life with raw emotional power. The stern figure in white is Joukahainen, clutching a crossbow as he prepares to ambush his rival, the wise old sage Väinämöinen. Behind him, a woman in dark robes reaches out, her gesture suggesting a desperate, perhaps futile, plea to halt his violent quest for revenge. The scratchy, swirling lines of the sea and sky create a moody, Symbolist atmosphere, perfectly capturing the heavy emotional weight of this mythological showdown.
