The Entombment
1504
Dürer captures the heavy sorrow of the Entombment here, with Christ's body being lowered into the grave by figures in elaborate, puffy Renaissance clothing. The level of detail is staggering for a black-and-white print; you can see the strain in the muscles and the deep folds of the fabric. Look at the bottom right corner of the tomb—Dürer carved his famous 'AD' logo right into the stone, claiming ownership of this masterpiece in a very permanent way, much like a modern artist signing a canvas.
