Jesus in the Praetorium
1845
Alexandre Cabanel painted this dramatic scene when he was just 22 years old, and it was his ticket to fame—winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1845. Notice how Jesus sits perfectly calm and almost glowing in the center, looking like a classical statue, while the soldiers around him are rough, chaotic, and almost caricature-like. This is classic Academic art: super polished, historically detailed, and designed to show off technical skill. It sets the stage for Cabanel becoming the ultimate 'painter of emperors' for Napoleon III later on.
