Meditation N. 33
1935
Alexej von Jawlensky created this hauntingly beautiful piece during the final years of his life, when severe arthritis forced him to paint on small boards resting on his lap. Part of his famous 'Meditations' series, the work strips away the human face he spent decades painting, leaving only pure, spiritual color. The dark background makes the vertical streaks of red and blue look like tears or rain, while the floating shapes above suggest a cosmic, almost mystical landscape. It's a powerful example of how physical limitation can lead to profound artistic simplification.
