Variation; Enlightenment (Triptych)
1919
Jawlensky was obsessed with color as a spiritual language, eventually abandoning his famous mystical faces for pure, floating shapes. In this panel from his 'Variations' series, a massive, dark grey form—resembling a mysterious shadow or a stylized tree—anchors the left side. It's surrounded by a vibrant rainbow of ovals and elongated blobs in red, yellow, and blue that feel almost like musical notes. Created in 1919, this Expressionist work is a meditation on 'Illumination' (Erleuchtung), proving that you don't need a realistic subject to convey deep emotion, just the right splash of paint on canvas.
