Gismonda

Alphonse Mucha

1894-1895

Gismonda by Alphonse Mucha, 1894-1895

Mucha created this stunning poster overnight to save a struggling printer, and it instantly made him the most famous artist in Paris. The towering, elegant figure of actress Sarah Bernhardt is draped in intricate Byzantine-style robes, holding a palm frond that stretches almost the entire height of the composition. This masterpiece basically invented the signature 'Mucha style' and kicked off the Art Nouveau craze, with its flowing lines and decorative motifs becoming the defining look of the 1890s. Bernhardt was so obsessed with the result that she immediately signed the artist to a six-year contract!
