The Lady of the Camellias
from Les Maîtres de l’Affiche
Alphonse Mucha created this stunning poster in 1896 to advertise the play 'La Dame aux Camélias,' starring the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt. Notice the iconic Art Nouveau style: the flowing robes, the starry background, and the elegant camelias growing at her feet. Bernhardt was so impressed by Mucha's earlier work that she signed him to a six-year contract, essentially launching his career and defining the look of an entire era. The poster perfectly captures her dramatic flair, turning a simple theatrical advertisement into a timeless piece of decorative art.
