The Seasons – Autumn
1896
Here we have the personification of Autumn, looking like she’s just stepped out of a vineyard dream. Mucha surrounds her with twisting grapevines and chrysanthemums, using those signature 'whiplash' curves that define Art Nouveau. She’s reaching for grapes, hinting at the wine harvest, while her flowing red hair merges with the autumnal colors of the background. Although this 1896 print made Mucha famous, he actually resented the 'Art Nouveau' label and considered these decorative panels mere commercial work compared to his 'serious' historical paintings.
