Caryatid by Amedeo Modigliani, c. 1913

Modigliani was absolutely obsessed with the caryatid—that ancient architectural column shaped like a woman—and he drew dozens of them around 1913. In this striking study, a figure with his signature elongated neck and limbs is rendered in soft, fleshy pinks against a cool, watery blue background. Her arms are raised high, seemingly supporting a heavy weight above her head, turning the human form into a pillar of quiet strength. It’s a beautiful blend of Cubist geometry and classical grace, showing how the artist took ancient ideas and made them completely his own.
