Scenography of the Copernican System
1660
Andreas Cellarius turned complex astronomy into a celestial theater with this stunning 1660 diagram of the Copernican system. At the center, a radiant sun with a human face watches over the Earth and other planets as they trace their colorful orbital paths, while the outer rings display the zodiac constellations. Flanked by angels holding banners and scholars pondering the cosmos in the corners, this Baroque masterpiece beautifully captures the moment humanity realized we weren't the center of the universe. It comes from his famous atlas, Harmonia Macrocosmica, which remains one of the most visually spectacular guides to the heavens ever created.
