Corallina elongata
1843-1853
Anna Atkins created this stunning blue-and-white image by placing actual seaweed directly onto light-sensitive paper and leaving it out in the sun. Known as a cyanotype, this process resulted in the first book ever illustrated entirely with photographic images, published way back in 1843. The delicate, ghostly white branches of Corallina elongata float against the deep Prussian blue background, looking almost like frost on a winter window. It is a beautiful blend of science and art that paved the way for modern photography!
