Polysiphonia Brodiaei [Part X]
1843-1853
Anna Atkins created this stunning image by placing a specimen of Polysiphonia Brodiaei algae directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing it to sunlight. This created a delicate white silhouette against a deep Prussian blue background, a technique called cyanotype. It allowed her to publish the first book ever illustrated entirely with photographs in 1843, turning a scientific catalog of seaweed into a ghostly, ethereal masterpiece that looks like a frozen underwater garden.
