Floral Still Life
About 1780
Anne Vallayer-Coster was one of the few women admitted to the French Royal Academy in the 18th century, and her stunning floral arrangements prove exactly why. In this lush bouquet, she masterfully captures the delicate textures of velvety pink roses, crisp white hollyhocks, and a vibrant red carnation spilling out of an elegant blue-and-white porcelain vase. If you look closely at the large pink bloom, you can even spot a tiny insect making its way across the petals, adding a touch of lively realism to the scene. Her ability to paint such lifelike textures earned her the admiration of Marie Antoinette, who became her greatest patron.
