Plato's Symposium
1869
Anselm Feuerbach brings ancient Greece to life in this dramatic scene of Plato's famous banquet. On the left, a wild, torch-lit procession crashes the party, led by a tipsy Alcibiades, while the serene figure of Socrates stands calmly in the center, holding a cup. The contrast between the chaotic entrance and the thoughtful philosophers lounging on the right perfectly captures the clash between earthly passion and intellectual pursuit. Feuerbach, a German Neoclassical painter, was obsessed with classical antiquity, and this masterpiece showcases his love for idealized figures and architectural grandeur.
