Filippo Cattaneo

Anthony van Dyck

1623

Filippo Cattaneo by Anthony van Dyck, 1623

Young Filippo Cattaneo stands here looking like a tiny, very serious nobleman, hand on hip and dressed in a spectacular black-and-gold outfit that probably cost a fortune. Painted by the young Anthony van Dyck during his Italian period in 1623, this portrait captures the wealthy Genoese aristocracy perfectly. Notice the little dog tugging at its leash? It adds a touch of life to the stiff pose, showing Van Dyck's genius for mixing formal grandeur with playful details. The artist was only about 24 years old here, already mastering the rich textures of silk and lace that would make him famous across Europe.
