Henri II de Lorraine

Henri II de Lorraine by Anthony van Dyck, c. 1634

Van Dyck was the master of making 17th-century nobility look like rock stars, and this portrait of Henri II de Lorraine is a prime example. Dressed in flamboyant red breeches and a gold doublet, the Duke poses with a casual elegance that contrasts with the heavy armor resting at his feet. The huge, floppy boots and feathered hat scream 'I have money and I know it,' capturing the height of Baroque fashion and the subject's notorious reputation as a dashing French nobleman.
