Frederick II the Great
Antoine Pesne captures the young Frederick the Great here, looking every bit the Prussian military hero in his signature blue uniform and powdered wig, complete with an ornate silver breastplate and a bold orange sash. Despite the martial pose with sword and helmet nearby, this 'Old Fritz' was actually a flute-playing philosopher who preferred French culture over Prussian discipline. Pesne, his favorite court painter, created this image to project power and royalty, evident in the crowns resting on the red velvet in the foreground. It’s a classic example of Rococo portraiture, blending military might with elegant, almost theatrical flair.
