In the Troops' Quarters outside Paris
1894
Imagine breaking into a lavish French palace and deciding the best move is to start a jam session. Anton von Werner depicts Prussian soldiers taking a break during the Franco-Prussian War, having commandeered a gilded Rococo salon for their own comfort. While one soldier plays a grand piano, others warm their boots by a fire built with scavenged wood and pinecones, creating a striking contrast between rough military life and delicate aristocratic luxury. It’s a snapshot of history where the invaders make themselves right at home, treating a nobleman's drawing room like a cozy barracks.
