Odysseus and Calypso
1882
Arnold Böcklin brings the ancient Greek myth to life with a moody, Symbolist twist. We see Odysseus, cloaked in deep blue, turning his back on the enchanting nymph Calypso to gaze longingly at the sea he cannot reach. Meanwhile, Calypso lounges in a shadowy cave, clutching her lyre and draped in a striking flash of crimson, seemingly trying to lure him back with her music. It's a perfect snapshot of longing versus temptation, painted with Böcklin's signature dreamlike atmosphere.
