Barnyard Fantasy
1935
Arthur Dove takes the humble farmyard and throws it into a swirling, psychedelic blender in this 1935 modernist gem. Instead of a literal depiction of cows and chickens, we get a rhythmic dance of biomorphic shapes—notice that dark, looming figure at the top that might just be a cow, and the teal, snake-like creature slithering at the bottom. Dove was one of America's first abstract artists, and he loved translating the sights of nature into pure color and form. It's a wild, imaginative take on rural life that proves you don't need realistic details to capture the feeling of a bustling barnyard.
