Sentimental Music
circa 1913
Arthur Dove was one of the first American artists to completely ditch realism, and this 1913 piece is his attempt to paint sound itself. Titled 'Sentimental Music', the canvas is filled with swirling, organic shapes in dusty pinks and deep charcoals that look like tangled bodies or the curves of instruments. Instead of showing a musician, Dove wanted to capture the actual feeling and rhythm of the music. It’s a bold, early experiment in synesthesia—seeing sound as color and shape—long before it became a trendy concept.
