Mime, howling. ‘Ohe! Ohe! Oh! Oh!’ by Arthur Rackham, 1910

Arthur Rackham brings Wagner’s opera *Das Rheingold* to life with this delightfully creepy scene from 1910. Beneath a twisted, skeletal tree that seems to have a mind of its own, the dwarf Mime cowers while his brother Alberich tormentingly grabs his head and holds a whip. Rackham was the master of 'golden age' illustration, using scratchy ink lines to make these mythical Nibelungs look like they crawled straight out of a dark fairy tale. The crouching figure's misery is so palpable you can almost hear the 'Ohe! Ohe!' from the title echoing off the rocks!
