Tunisian View
1914
August Macke scribbled this quick sketch during his famous 1914 trip to Tunisia with Paul Klee. If you look closely, you can see German words like 'gelb' (yellow) and 'grün' (green) scattered across the page—he was essentially writing a color-coded shopping list for a painting he planned to create later. This wasn't just a doodle; it was a blueprint for capturing the intense North African light that would define his final masterpieces. Tragically, Macke died in World War I just months after returning, making these annotated sketches some of his last artistic breaths.
