Zoological Garden I
1912
Step into August Macke's vibrant 1912 vision of a zoo, where three identical men in bowler hats stand like clones observing a chaotic menagerie of exotic creatures. A giant blue macaw perches boldly in the foreground, while a kangaroo and a wide-eyed gazelle seem to burst out of the canvas in a kaleidoscope of electric greens, yellows, and blues. Macke, a key figure in the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, used these clashing colors to capture the overwhelming sensory experience of modern city life. It's a playful, almost dreamlike snapshot of bourgeois tourists getting lost in a jungle of their own making.
