The Round Dance
1883
Rodin is best known for his heavy bronze sculptures, but here he lets loose with a sketch that feels almost alive with movement. A chaotic circle of figures grapples and dances in the center, creating a whirlwind of energy, while calmer groups of onlookers and lovers frame the scene against a distant, hilly backdrop with a church spire. It’s a raw, energetic study that shows how the master used drawing to work out the complex emotions and physical tangles of 'The Round Dance' before committing them to stone.
