Archangel Raphael

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo

Archangel Raphael by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo

Murillo, a master of the Spanish Baroque, depicts the Archangel Raphael as a youthful, wandering guide rather than a stern divine messenger. Clad in a flowing yellow robe and leaning heavily on a staff, he clutches a large fish in his right hand—a crucial detail from the Book of Tobit where the fish's organs serve as a magical cure for blindness. The loose, sketchy brushwork and heavy crackling of the paint suggest this is a rapid oil study, capturing the angel in mid-stride with a wonderfully human, almost tired expression. It’s a perfect example of how Baroque artists brought holy figures down to earth with emotional realism.
