Fox in Winter
1904
Swedish artist Bruno Liljefors is often called the father of Swedish wildlife painting, and this 1904 piece shows his talent for capturing nature's quiet tension. A red fox stands alert in a snow-heavy forest, its bright fur contrasting sharply with the cold blues and greens of the winter landscape. Liljefors was an avid hunter and naturalist who spent hours observing animals in the wild, allowing him to paint them with incredible behavioral accuracy rather than stiff studio poses. You can almost feel the fox pausing to listen for a mouse under the snow, a moment of stillness before the hunt.
