Sea Eagle's Nest
1907
Bruno Liljefors brings the raw drama of the Scandinavian coastline to life in this intense family portrait. A massive sea eagle crashes into its messy, stick-built nest, wings still spread wide as it delivers a bloody meal to its hungry, fluffy chicks. Unlike the stiff, posed animal paintings of the past, Liljefors spent countless hours observing wildlife in the wild, capturing the chaotic, unromanticized reality of nature. The churning grey sea in the background perfectly mirrors the fierce struggle for survival happening in the foreground.
