Pea Harvesters (recto)
c. 1880
Camille Pissarro captures the quiet, backbreaking rhythm of rural life in this lively sketch of women harvesting peas. Notice the loose, energetic strokes and quick washes of blue and orange that bring the peasant women to life without needing perfect detail. As a founding father of Impressionism, Pissarro loved painting ordinary workers in the fields, and you can almost feel the sun beating down on their backs just from the way he captured their hunched postures. The 'C.P.' signature in the corner is a classic hallmark of his quick, on-the-spot studies.
