The Cardsharps by Caravaggio, ca 1595

Imagine sitting down for a friendly game of cards, only to realize you're being hustled. Caravaggio freezes this exact moment of deception. A wealthy young boy, dressed in fancy velvet, is focused on his hand, completely oblivious to the older man behind him signaling the cards to an accomplice. The accomplice, sporting a flashy feathered hat, is peeking at the boy's cards while hiding a winning hand behind his back. This painting was a sensation in 1595 because it showed real, gritty street life instead of boring religious figures. It was so famous that artists copied it over 50 times!
