In a Roman Osteria
1866
Imagine sitting down for a rustic meal of wine and cabbage in 1860s Rome, only to have the guy at the next table glare at you like you owe him money. That's the vibe of Carl Bloch's famous scene, where a man in a red sash breaks the fourth wall with intense side-eye while women in traditional peasant garb look on. Bloch, a Danish painter, spent years in Italy soaking up local culture, and this painting became a huge hit back home for its 'exotic' realism. Even the cat lurking in the shadows looks ready to pounce if the tavern brawl starts.
