Coronation of Gustav III
1782-1793
Carl Gustaf Pilo spent over a decade capturing the grand 1772 coronation of Sweden's King Gustav III, working on it until his death in 1793. The painting is famous for its ghostly, unfinished look on the right side, where the artist sketched out the crowd but never fully painted them in. This wasn't a mistake—Pilo actually died before he could complete the entire canvas, leaving a haunting glimpse into his creative process. The finished left side bursts with rich details of the royal ceremony, creating a striking contrast with the spectral figures waiting in the wings.
