The Sorcerer
circa 1875-1880
Carl Spitzweg, usually known for his humorous sketches of everyday German life, takes a wild detour into fantasy with this dramatic scene. A rather unimpressed-looking gentleman in a top hat and long coat stands calmly before a snarling, pale dragon emerging from a fiery cave, holding a tiny wand. Scattered skulls on the rocky path suggest previous visitors weren't so lucky, while a majestic castle looms in the misty distance above ancient ruins. It's a delightful clash of the mundane and the mythical, looking as if a regular bourgeois commute suddenly turned into a high-stakes fairy tale quest.
