Fishing Children
1865-1870
Carl Spitzweg, usually famous for his quirky, humorous portraits of eccentric bourgeois characters, takes a turn into the moody, atmospheric world of Romanticism here. In 'Fischende Kinder' (Fishing Children), a tiny, sun-dappled clearing is tucked away inside a deep, shadowy forest gorge where three small figures are busy fishing by the water's edge. They are completely dwarfed by the towering, dark cliffs and dense foliage around them, capturing that classic Romantic theme of humans being small against the vast, mysterious power of nature. The bright patch of sky in the distance offers a little window of hope out of this dark, enclosed world.
