Monastery ruin Eldena
1824
Caspar David Friedrich loved a good ruin, and this 1824 masterpiece is a perfect example of his Romantic obsession with nature reclaiming human structures. The crumbling Gothic arches of Eldena Abbey are practically swallowed by lush, tangled trees, with a cozy little cottage nestled right in the middle of the decay. Friedrich actually studied near these ruins in Greifswald, and they became a favorite subject for him, symbolizing the fleeting nature of human endeavors compared to the eternal power of the forest. It's a moody, atmospheric scene that makes you wonder who lives in that tiny house surrounded by giant stone bones!
