Devil's Bridge

Devil's Bridge by Caspar Wolf

Caspar Wolf captures the terrifying beauty of the Swiss Alps in this dramatic scene of the Devil's Bridge, or Teufelsbrücke, spanning the roaring Reuss River. Tiny travelers and their mules inch across the high stone arch, dwarfed by the sheer, jagged cliffs that plunge into the misty gorge below. This kind of awe-inspiring, slightly dangerous landscape was a hallmark of the emerging Romantic movement, which loved to show nature as powerful and overwhelming. Legend has it the bridge was built with the help of the devil himself, which fits perfectly with the dramatic, almost supernatural atmosphere Wolf created.
