The Hunter from Maxim’’s

The Hunter from Maxim’’s by Chaïm Soutine, circa 1925

Imagine the fanciest restaurant in 1920s Paris, Maxim's, and then look at the guy standing at the door. Soutine paints this bellhop in a blazing red uniform that practically screams for attention against the gloomy, swirling blue background. Instead of a polite, subservient smile, the figure looks weary and distorted, with hands planted firmly on his hips in a stance of quiet defiance. Soutine, a key figure in the Expressionist movement, loved painting the 'little people'—servants, butchers, and maids—giving them a raw, emotional intensity usually reserved for royalty. The thick, frantic brushstrokes make the red fabric look like it's vibrating with nervous energy.
