Little Girl by Chaïm Soutine, between 1894 and 1943

Chaïm Soutine throws us right into a swirl of deep crimson and anxiety with this portrait. The young girl stares out with wide, somewhat haunted eyes, her pale skin contrasting sharply against that violent, fiery background. Soutine, a master of Expressionism, didn't care about pretty perfection; he wanted to capture raw feeling. You can see the thick, frantic brushstrokes in her white blouse and reddish hair, making the whole image feel like it's vibrating with nervous energy. It's a far cry from his famous rotting meat paintings, but it shares that same intense, almost uncomfortable honesty.
