Heracles frees Hesione by Charles Le Brun, ca 1650-1655

Charles Le Brun captures a moment of high drama in this Baroque scene from Greek mythology. Heracles stands tall in a small boat, poised to smash a sea monster with his massive club, while a companion rows them toward the beast. On the rocky shore, Hesione cowers, having been offered as a sacrifice to the creature before the hero arrived to save the day. The swirling clouds and dynamic poses are classic Baroque elements, designed to make the viewer feel the tension of the battle. Le Brun, who later became the chief painter to King Louis XIV, shows his early talent for storytelling here.
