Portrait of Wang Xizhi 105x66 by Chen Hongshou

Wang Xizhi, the legendary calligrapher, strides forward in flowing red robes, clutching a bamboo fan while his servant trails behind carrying a goose in a basket. Chen Hongshou, a Ming dynasty master famous for his quirky, exaggerated figures, gives the scholar a distinctively large head and solemn expression. The goose isn't random—legend says Wang was so obsessed with geese that he'd trade his masterful calligraphy just to own one, believing their movements inspired his brushstrokes. The inscription reveals this piece is a copy of Chen's late work, with the original treasure now resting in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum.
