A Harbor in Moonlight by Claude-Joseph Vernet, 1714-1789

Under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky, moonlight spills across a calm harbor where fishermen haul in their nets and travelers huddle around a warm campfire. A towering lighthouse stands guard on the rocky cliff to the left, its beacon cutting through the night, while a large sailing ship anchors peacefully in the distance. Vernet was a master of these atmospheric night scenes, which were incredibly popular with British aristocrats who loved the romantic moodiness of his work. He famously painted a series of French ports for King Louis XV, but these moonlight fantasies allowed him to play with light and shadow in ways that prefigured the Romantic movement.
