Moonlight
Claude-Joseph Vernet was a master of atmospheric drama, and this moody night scene proves it. Notice how the moonlight pierces through heavy clouds, creating a shimmering path on the water that competes with the warm, cozy glow of the campfire on the left bank. While fishermen busy themselves in the foreground and tall ships rest in the harbor, the scene feels both quiet and alive. Vernet was so famous for his seascapes that King Louis XV commissioned him to paint every major port in France, essentially making him the official documentarian of the French coastline!
