Ponte Molle, Rome by Claude-Joseph Vernet, 18th century

Claude-Joseph Vernet was a master of capturing light and atmosphere, and this delicate sketch of Rome's Ponte Milvio (Ponte Molle) is a perfect example. The bridge, famous for the ancient Battle of the Milvian Bridge, is shown here with its medieval fortified tower on the left, standing guard over the Tiber River. Vernet uses soft watercolor washes and precise ink lines to create a serene, almost nostalgic scene that would have been a popular souvenir for 18th-century travelers on the Grand Tour. It's a quiet moment in history, frozen in ink and wash.
