Poplars on the Epte

Poplars on the Epte by Claude Monet, 1891

Monet was so obsessed with a row of poplar trees along the Epte River that he actually bought them from a local timber merchant just to delay their chopping down until he finished painting them! You can see his frantic, shimmering brushstrokes capturing the dappled sunlight dancing on the water and the tall, slender trunks reaching for the sky. This series is a perfect example of Impressionism, where the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere matter more than perfect details, turning a simple riverbank into a dazzling light show.
